About

Posted on December 4, 2025 by urbanoptions

Since 1978, Urban Options has been dedicated to empowering SGA55 communities with practical, accessible solutions for a healthier environment. As a non-profit community agency, we specialize in providing trusted energy and environmental information, hands-on services, and educational programs designed to improve the environmental quality of our urban spaces.

At the heart of our mission is the belief that informed choices lead to cleaner, more sustainable communities. Through workshops, demonstrations, and community outreach, we help residents and small businesses adopt home and yard improvements that are both environmentally responsible and beneficial to overall well-being.

Michigan’s Energy and Environmental Demonstration House

One of Urban Options’ cornerstone initiatives is the Michigan Energy and Environmental Demonstration House. This unique facility showcases practical, real-world examples of energy efficiency and sustainable living. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring:

  • Home insulation and air-sealing strategies

  • Composting and organic gardening

  • Recycling methods

  • Other environmental technologies designed for everyday life

By experiencing these demonstrations firsthand, visitors gain practical knowledge that empowers them to make meaningful improvements in their own homes.

Leading the Way in Solar Hot Water Solutions

Urban Options is pleased to announce a new partnership with SGA55 the State of Michigan Energy Office through a grant that enables us to administer the Solar Domestic Hot Water Rebate Program. This initiative supports residential and small commercial property owners who want to reduce their utility costs, lower their carbon footprint, and take advantage of Michigan’s surprising solar potential.

Working alongside the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association and the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation, Urban Options is helping expand access to high-quality solar technology across the state.

Rebates Now Available

Participants may receive:

  • 50% of installation costs, up to $4,000 for new solar domestic hot water systems

  • Up to $2,000 for refurbishing or repairing existing systems

Program Manager John Watson highlights Michigan’s solar strengths:
“Who says that solar doesn’t work in Michigan? We actually get more solar gain in the summertime in Michigan than the state of Florida! With a 50% state solar rebate, this translates to big savings and a faster payback for anyone wanting to harvest those rays.”

Long-Term Benefits of Solar Hot Water Systems

Over its lifetime, a solar domestic hot water system will:

  • Prevent up to 50 tons of greenhouse gas emissions

  • Pay for itself through significantly reduced utility bills

  • Contribute to economic growth by reducing reliance on fossil fuels

Application packets for consumer rebates will be available starting April 1, 2005, with submissions accepted through October 1, 2005.
